Why Christmas Was Banned Until 1820

yule log You may know that our Christmas traditions come from older, pagan practices. But did you know that many of them stem in rites that celebrated debauchery, lawlessness and even human sacrifice?
These days, Christmas seems to be more about materialism than anything else, and it’s not surprising that many children think Santa, not Jesus, is the reason for the season. Jesus advised a rich man to give away all that he owned because it was ‘easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven’ (Mark 10:25, Matt 19:24) and the apostle Paul encouraged followers of Christ to ‘be in the world but not of the world’ (Rom 12:2). So it’s more than a little ironic for the highest commercial holiday of the year to be associated with a religion whose founder warned against secularism and materialism.
But the shopping frenzy isn’t the only way they have taken the Christ out of Christmas. Check out this video and find out why Christmas was banned in America until 1820.
