YU55 Asteroid- Is It a Threat?

Asteroid YU55 is here. In the next 14-hours this piece of space rock will pass close to both the Earth 6:28PM in New York and the Moon 2:14AM in New York. There are Russian rockets being launched, Alien welcome home signs being written, and reasonable people going about their business of being smart in difficult times.

  1. According to my Stellarium program it comes closest around midnight Nov. 8 , 2011 PST, about 8 and a half hours later than reported. Also, if you go to the JPL Orbital diagram and upon it first opening, change where it advances by days to hours, it shows it close approach around 6 PM on the 9th.

    I was a PROFESSIONAL Astronomer, back in the mid ’80’s. My specialty, was to do orbital calculations for satellites of Jupiter, Saturn, & Uranus- for JPL. I can state ABSOLUTELY, that when JPL says that the 2028 pass of YU-55 at 20,000 miles, CANNOT BE DONE with that precision. Earth’s and YU-55’s orbits intersect every 16 months or so- and one day, we WILL meet. I believe “Planet Killer” is the correct term… Have a nice day!

Using their ship’s engine, they pull on the asteroid with a force of 490 N. Initially the tug and the asteroid are at rest, 430 m apart. How much time does it take for the ship and the asteroid to meet?
